The Real Cost of a Slow Website (And How to Fix It)

Your website is slow. You probably know this. What you might not know is exactly how much it's costing you — and that the fix is often less work than you expect.
The numbers you need to care about
Google's research is unambiguous: a 1-second delay in page load time reduces conversions by 7%. A 3-second load time causes 53% of mobile visitors to abandon. For every 100ms of improvement in load time, Amazon reported a 1% increase in revenue. These aren't academic figures — they're from production systems at scale.
For most businesses, slow website speed is one of the highest-ROI performance investments available. The marginal cost of improvement is engineering time. The marginal gain is a percentage of your existing revenue, starting immediately.
The Core Web Vitals that Google (and users) care about
Core Web Vitals are Google's standardised set of performance metrics. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measures how long until the main content is visible — target under 2.5 seconds. Interaction to Next Paint (INP) measures responsiveness to user input — target under 200ms. Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) measures visual stability — target under 0.1. The five most common performance killers we find in audits
Unoptimised images are responsible for more than half of the excess page weight we find in audits. A JPEG that should be 40KB is served at 4MB because nobody ran it through a compression pipeline. The fix: use WebP or AVIF format, implement lazy loading for below-the-fold images, and serve images at the correct display size using responsive srcset attributes.
Render-blocking scripts are the second most common issue. Third-party scripts — analytics, chat widgets, ad trackers — are loaded synchronously in the document head, blocking the browser from rendering anything until they've downloaded and executed. The fix: defer all non-critical scripts, load third parties from a facade pattern, and ruthlessly audit which third parties are actually necessary.
Excessive JavaScript bundle size is the third. Modern React applications routinely ship 500KB–1MB of JavaScript before any of your own code loads. The fix: aggressive code splitting with dynamic imports, tree-shaking dead code, and replacing heavy libraries with lighter alternatives or hand-rolled solutions where the library is doing more than you need.
Missing caching strategy is fourth. Most web applications make the same database queries on every request because there's no caching layer. Adding Redis or edge caching for frequently accessed, slowly changing data can reduce server response times by 10x.
No CDN for static assets is fifth. Serving static files from a single origin server means every user's browser has to make a round trip to your server location. A CDN serves these files from edge locations close to the user. For a global product, this alone can cut static asset load time by 60–80%.
How to audit your own site in 20 minutes
Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights, WebPageTest, and Lighthouse in Chrome DevTools. Note your LCP, INP, and CLS scores. Look at the waterfall chart and identify the longest-running requests. Look at the network tab filtered by size and identify your largest assets. This twenty-minute exercise will tell you exactly where to focus your first optimization sprint.
